Gerard Butler, Sam Worthington & Matthew McConaughey Join Simon West-Directed Mocap Film ?Thunder Run?

Modern war films have rarely done well at the box office in the past decade that we've been at war in Afghanistan and Iraq. The audience that might come out to see films set during these wars either hasn't been interested in the stories being told, or would rather get their war fix from Call of Duty. So it isn't that surprising that we haven't seen much in the way of ambitious CGI mocap war films. Producers at a new company called Freedom Films (yep) are working to change that with an adaptation of David Zucchino's book Thunder Run: The Armored Strike to Capture Baghdad. As part of a gambit to get investors and distributors interested in the project, they've enlisted Gerard Butler, Sam Worthington and Matthew McConaughey to act in and voice the leads. A press release announces that Thunder Run will be directed by Simon West, who is currently making The Expendables 2. Thunder Run is intended to be "an all CG 3-D action thriller" based on the book. Robert Port and Ken Nolan (Black Hawk Down) are scripting. (Simon West is also producing a mocap 3D Night of the Living Dead prequel, Night of the Living Dead: Origins 3-D, and the same company doing that digital work will be used on Thunder Run.) This is being sold at the American Film Market, and this is a project that I wouldn't be surprised to see disappear into the aether in the months to come. But we'll keep an eye on the fortunes of the project. Maybe it will have some luck. Here's the description of the book, from Amazon: Based on reporting that was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Thunder Run chronicles one of the boldest gambles in modern military history. Three battalions and fewer than a thousand men launched a violent thrust of tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles into the heart of a city of 5 million people and in three days of bloody combat ended the Iraqi war. Thunder Run is the story of the surprise assault on Baghdad?one of the most decisive battles in American combat history?by the Spartan Brigade, the Second Brigade of the Third Infantry Division (Mechanized). More than just a rendering of a single battle, Thunder Run candidly recounts how soldiers respond under fire and stress and how human frailties are magnified in a war zone. The product of over a hundred interviews with commanders and men from the Second Brigade, Thunder Run is a riveting firsthand account of how a single armored brigade was able to capture an Arab capital defended by one of the world's largest armies.

Facebook testing 'Trusted Friends' feature, the password unlock we hope you never have to use

Here's a situation: you create a Facebook account. You fall in love with said account. You're on it all day, every single day. And then, your computer explodes. You go to login on a new machine, and you realize that your minty fresh browser has no recollection of your Facebook password. At this point, you're probably pondering the point of taking another breath. Evidently, Facebook understands your dilemma, and in the coming weeks, it'll be testing out a new password recovery system for those who can't / won't take advantage of the existing methods. Christened "Trusted Friends," the feature will allow a user to select between three and five pals that they're confident will help out in dire times. Then, should you lose your password, Facebook can send recovery codes to that gang, and they can hand 'em over to you in order to unlock things. According to Facebook, it's akin to "giving a house key to your friends when you go on vacation." The only concern? Friends aren't friends forever, and even BFFs can morph into WEEs given the right circumstances. Choose wisely, Facebookers.

Linux Foundation memo: how to make a computer that doesn't lock out GNU/Linux

UEFI is a new hardware standard nominally aimed at stopping malicious software, but it could also make it illegal to replace Windows or MacOS with GNU/Linux on your computer. The Linux Foundation has written a technical memo for hardware vendors explaining how they can ship PCs that still protect users from malware, without putting them [...]

Amazon to take on Apple this summer with Samsung-built tablet?

You really should pay attention when Engadget's founder, Peter Rojas speaks about the tech industry. Especially when he leads into a story like this:
It's something of an open secret that Amazon is working on an Android tablet and I am 99 percent certain they are having Samsung build one for them.
The gdgt piece goes on to present a very reasoned argument that paints Amazon, not Samsung or the rest of the traditional consumer electronics industry, as Apple's chief competition in the near-term tablet space. An idea that'll be tough to argue against if Amazon -- with its combined music (downloadable and streaming), video, book, and app ecosystem -- can actually launch a dirt-cheap, highly-customized, 7-inch Android tablet this summer as Pete predicts. Oh, and the fact that Amazon already has our credit card details will certainly make for easy adoption. Hit the source below for the full read or, better yet, stay tuned for the next Engadget Show where we'll be nerding-out with the son of the father of the father of Engadget.
